Why Are My Water Pipes Making a Banging Noise?

It is common for homeowners to think a noise coming from their water pipes is perfectly natural. But it isn’t always the case. Far too often we just get used to it and ignore the noise. But doing so can cause them to get damaged.

There are several reasons why your water pipes are making a banging noise. If you have noticed a new banging noise coming from your pipes, or a pre-existing sound has become louder, here are a few reasons that may be happening.

 High Water Pressure

Commercial Plumbing

One of the most common reasons there is a banging sound in your water pipes is due to high water pressure. Your water pressure PSI should be between 40 to 70, but anything higher will need a valve installed to reduce the pressure. In this instance, call a plumber from Waterguard Plumbing to install a pressure reducer valve. This fits on the main water valve to help regulate the water pressure and it should make the banging noises stop.

Issues with the Water Hammer

If there is a loud noise only when you shut the water off, this is likely a water hammer. This happens with older plumbing. It happens when the water is shut off, the valve shuts and the water bangs against it.

One of our plumbers can install a water hammer arrestor to help with this.

Loose Pipes

If the pipes have come loose over the years, this will cause a banging noise in your water pipes. There are metal pieces that hold the pipes in place, but over the years they can become loose. If the banging noise happens only when the water is running, this could be why.

If you can reach the pipes, you can tighten the straps yourself. If not, you can call a Waterguard plumber and they will give your pipes an inspection while they are there.

Too Little Water

Your hot water pipes can make a banging noise if there is too much air in them. It will cause the water to make noise inside the pipes when it is moving through.

Loose Washer

A loose or broken washer can also be the cause of noisy pipes. If you think this may be the case, call us to check it out.
